Not knowing much about k-pop before this project, I was puzzled by the way idols were developed, undergoing years of professional training in dance, signing and performance in general. The years of extensive training seemed unnecessary, but after working on this project I can see why that is needed.
At the start of the project I was not familiar with the k-pop genre and I possessed no discernible talents required to make a music video. Fortunately I had a great group, with members who were able to take a leadership position, and possessed unique skills, that when put together were perfect to get the job done.
My main job for the project was dancing. I found it difficult to make my unflexible body move in ways it never had before, this gave me an appreciation for the athleticism of idols. The aspect of preforming that I gained the most appreciation for from doing this video was the ability to make your performance look good, I learned it’s not only enough to be good at dancing, you have to be charismatic and look good on camera, in order to be successful in k-pop. When filming the video I didn’t do much in the way of showmanship, and in hindsight I wish I smiled more. Part of the reason I took a more reserved approach was that I was somewhat self-conscious; I didn’t expect to feel so vulnerable, even though our video will only receive a couple views, whereas k-pop videos will receive millions of views. I now appreciate the confidence idols have to commit to preforming and put themselves out there. I realize now that I would require years of training in areas of performance I hadn’t even thought of before, in order to be a good performer.
